The Rapture

You might have heard about the term ” the Rapture,” especially if you are within Christian circles and communities. It is a topic that often comes up in Christian conversations about the end times. In daily conversations, sermons, Bible studies, and Christian media like books, TV shows, or movies, the Rapture encourages curiosity, questions, and hope. So, let’s learn more about it, what the Bible says, and why it matters for believers.

 

What is the Rapture?

According to Biblical studies, the Rapture is the moment when Christians believe that Jesus will return to take His followers to heaven with Him. The event is seen as a crucial part of God’s plan for the end times when the world as we know it will change dramatically. The Rapture isn’t just about Jesus coming back; it is about the believers being “caught up” to meet Him.

We can’t find the word “Rapture” itself in the Bible. It comes from the Latin word “rapture,” which means “caught up” or “snatched away.”

However, the word “Rapture “relates to many Christians on Earth as it indicates the moment when believers will finally be united with Christ forever. So, it isn’t just about Jesus returning to Earth. It is described as a sudden and miraculous event where believers will be “caught up” to meet Christ in the air. Those who have passed away in faith will rise first, and those still alive will follow.

As mentioned, we find one and can’t find the specific word in the Bible. So, where does it come from?

The idea is attained from specific passages in the New Testament that describe how the believers will be taken up to meet Christ in the air when He returns

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17** (KJV) says:

_”For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”_

In this Bible verse, the apostle Paul tells Christians that when Jesus comes back, those who have already died in faith will rise first. Meanwhile, those who are still alive will be “caught up” or taken to meet Jesus in the air.

Therefore, we can define it as the first to rise, being the believers who have already died as Christians. It is reassuring to know that it’s a promise that no matter if we are alive or have passed away, we will be with Jesus when He returns to the world.

When Will the Rapture Happen?

One of the biggest questions revolving around the Christian community is when it’s going to happen. The truth is, no one knows. Even the Bible doesn’t give us any hints about the time and place of the event. Moreover, Jesus Himself says that no one knows the exact moment.

As we can see in Matthew 24:36:

_”But of that day and hour knoweth no man, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”_

That should be enough to explain to us that the time and place of the Rapture are still a mystery. But we need to be ready at all times. The Bible verse mentioned reminds us to focus on living a life that honors God rather than worrying about the end times.

The idea of being ready doesn’t have to be extreme and stressful. It is really about living a way that pleases God—doing good deeds and living a good life. Preparing our hearts and lives for when Jesus returns is more important.

Below is a Bible verse that tells us to be ready, because the Lord Jesus could come at any moment.

Matthew 24:44 (KJV):

“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

It reminds us to focus on God and only what truly matters. Instead of being afraid or feared with something in the future, we can find peace in knowing God has everything under control.

In the meantime, we can serve others, stay connected to His Word, and nurture our faith. Living in hope will be more beautiful than being feared with predictions.

What Happens During the Rapture?

The Bible describes it as a sudden event. In the blink of an eye, it will happen to all believers. The Bible verse provides an excellent example of vivid imagery that helps us understand how sudden the event will be.

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (KJV) says

_”Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”_

At that moment, Christians will receive brand new glorified bodies that are free from pain, sickness, and death. It is granted for Jesus believers. And when it happens, imagine being a believer who feels no more suffering, only joy and peace with God’s companionship forever.

The Bible also explicitly shows that a particular event will occur instantly.

The Bible also promises that this will happen in an instant.

In 1 Corinthians 15:52 (KJV), it says:

“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”

This verse encourages us to understand how sudden and powerful it can be. One minute, everything we experience in the world seems normal; the next, believers will be with Jesus, transformed, and ready to live a new life in eternity.

What Will Happen to Those Left Behind?

So, what will happen to non-believers or those left behind? The answer is also in the Bible. The lives of those left behind will become challenging. The world will enter a dark era. Many experts explain this era as a time of chaos with significant natural disasters, wars, and widespread turmoil.

But it doesn’t mean a dead-end. Even during this time, there is still hope for those who repent. The Bible also teaches that people can still be saved during the tribulation, although it might be much more complicated.

Why Does the Rapture Matter?

It reminds Christians of their hope in Jesus. It’s not only about the dramatic event that is bound to happen but also about the promise that those who fully believe in Christ will live an eternity with Him.

It is also a wake-up call. For many people, it is a way to learn the purpose of life. Jesus calls us to love God and other humans and to share the Good News with others.

For many Christians, the Rapture also delivers a comforting message, especially during hard times. It is reassuring to know that there’s a future where we will be with Jesus forever.

How Can We Be Ready?

The Bible encourages believers to stay ready for ‘Jesus’s’ return. In Luke 12:40 (KJV), Jesus says:

_”Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.”_

Being ready means having a close relationship with Jesus Christ. It means living out your faith daily, praying, reading the Bible, and trusting God in both good and bad times. Rather than focusing on predictions, it is more important to live with compassion and kindness.

While we don’t know precisely when the Rapture will happen, the Bible encourages us to be ready and live with faith and hope daily.
